This appeal resonates with the Sangh's long-standing concern about the impact of Macaulayism on Indian education and culture. Macaulay's objective, as Modi noted, was to create Indians who were "Indians by appearance but British at heart." This led to a deep-rooted belief in Western superiority, causing a decline in pride in Indian heritage and a shift towards foreign innovation. The Sangh Parivar, since its inception, has fought against this colonial mindset, as exemplified by M.S. Golwalkar's writings, who emphasized the need for interpreters who were Indian in blood and culture but British in thought and intellect.
The Sangh's concerns evolved in the 1970s with the rise of Marxist influence in academia, particularly in social science institutions. This was further complicated by the alignment of Marxism with Western thought. The Vajpayee government's efforts to "nationalize and spiritualize" education and increase the representation of Indian culture in curricula were met with controversy and labeled as "saffronization" by critics.
