Singapore's transport authority is breathing new life into an aging rail system, but is it enough to overcome its troubled past? The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that 88% of the renewal works on the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (BPLRT) system are now complete, marking a significant step towards enhancing reliability. This system has been fully operational since November 8, 2025, and is expected to improve overall performance.
The LTA has also refreshed the train fleet, deploying 19 new light rail vehicles and upgrading 13 second-generation LRVs for compatibility with the CBTC. Additionally, renovations are underway at the Operations Control Centre to enhance coordination and monitoring.
The BPLRT's history has been tumultuous, with former Transport Ministers acknowledging its design flaws and 'legacy problems'. The completion date for the renewal works has been pushed back twice, first from 2024 to 2026 due to COVID-19, and then to the fourth quarter of 2026.
